From Guest to People Services Coodinator: Meet Mia Peterson
For Mia Peterson, Grand View Lodge has been a cherished part of her life long before it became her workplace. With childhood memories at Gull Haven, family dinners at Italian Gardens and joyful days spent at the south pool (see photo above; yes that's Mia shooting her first basket with her dad at the beloved south pool). Grand View Lodge holds a special place in her heart. Her family has enjoyed a cabin in the Brainerd Lakes Area for years, allowing Mia to visit the lodge since she was just a toddler. Today, the resort she grew up loving is where she is building her professional future.
Mia hails from Kenyon, Minnesota, a small town located south of the Twin Cities. After completing her studies at the University of St. Thomas, she began her career in the metro area. Initially, Mia considered healthcare as her career choice, taking an administrative role in a physical therapy company. This experience taught her an important lesson: her true enjoyment comes from working with people and creating positive experiences for employees.
Mia started at Grand View Lodge as an executive admin in May of 2025. There she learned so much working with other departments and better understanding how they supported the business. It was excellent experience as she was introduced to so many parts of the hospitality industry. In October 2026, Mia accepted the role of People Services Coordinator. This position aligns perfectly with her passion for working with others. "I just love it here," she shared. "Knowing what new employees are walking into makes me really excited for them."
Learning Hospitality from Every Corner of the Resort
Mia's journey in the hospitality industry began at Grand View Lodge, and she could not have asked for a better learning environment. Her exposure to various departments taught her that communication styles vary greatly, and valuable lessons can come from employees at all levels within an organization. Perhaps most importantly, she learned what true hospitality entails.
Mia recalls moments when she's needed help to find something or ask a quick question. When she reaches out to Lee Byram, Director of Banquets, he's always available to guide her. Even though Lee has a full plate of work, he always is there for the team. She sees instances like these throughout the resort. It might be a front desk employee assisting with banquet setup or one department stepping in to help another during peak times.
"Everyone just really breathes hospitality here," Mia said. "And not just for our guests, it's also for each other." This supportive environment guided her toward a career in People Services.
Creating a Great First Impression for New Associates
In her current role, Mia focuses on helping new candidates and employees experience the same welcoming culture she knows so well. Her responsibilities include pre-screening applicants, guiding candidates through the hiring and onboarding process, and leading the new associate orientation. This orientation has quickly become one of her favorite aspects of the job.
"There's such an opportunity with the onboarding process to really welcome our new associates," Mia explained. With her experience across departments, she understands what new associates are becoming a part of, and she wishes for them to feel that excitement too.
For Mia, People Services is not just about processes and paperwork. It is about creating an employee experience that mirrors the same level of care Grand View Lodge employees provide to guests daily. "Our staff spends so much time here," she emphasized. "With how well they take care of our guests, it's crucial for us to take care of them."
Mia credits her People Services team of Kaylene, Tayler, Sara and Merrick for their support and mentorship as she grows into her new role. She also recognizes that People Services sometimes involves difficult conversations and complex situations. Her approach is simple: listening. "Being someone employees feel they can approach is really important," she said. You can learn more about Learn more about working at Grand View Lodge here.

A Place That Has Always Felt Like Home
While Mia's professional journey with Grand View Lodge is relatively new, her personal connection spans decades. See Mia sitting on her mom's lap in the photo above at their Gull Haven cabin on Gull Lake. As she drives onto the property each morning, she feels a sense of gratitude. "I think it's gorgeous, and I can't believe I get to work in a place this beautiful," she shared.
However, it is not just the stunning scenery that sets Grand View Lodge apart. Mia highlights the close-knit community among staff. They genuinely celebrate each other's successes, making each victory feel collective. "I've never worked in an environment like that," she noted.
Now, as part of People Services, Mia has the opportunity to help preserve and strengthen that culture for future generations of Grand View Lodge associates.
Life Beyond the Lodge
Outside of her professional life, Mia enjoys spending time outdoors. She loves being on the lake, taking walks, and playing volleyball on her parents' sand court. Concerts, reading and enjoying the company of friends and family are also high on her list of favorite activities. When Mia visits her parents, she gets to hang out with two cockerspaniel brothers, MJ and Bruin.
A movie enthusiast, Mia counts "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" among her favorites. She appreciates the film's reminder to cherish life as it unfolds. Her favorite podcast, "The Psychology of Your 20s," reflects her curiosity about people and the experiences that shape them.
When it comes to dining at Grand View Lodge, Mia finds it hard to choose just one favorite. A Char Craft Steaks' filet is a top contender, alongside a BLT from Northwoods Pub and a Collagen Crush Latte from Brew. The holiday season brings family gatherings and delicious meals. Plus, her family enjoys coming to the Brainerd Lakes Area for visits with Mia.
Coming Full Circle
Mia's journey has come full circle. The child who visited Grand View Lodge now welcomes new employees to the same place that shaped her childhood. The photo above shows Mia with her mom, dad and little sister at Italian Gardens. The executive administrator discovered her passion for enhancing the employee experience and now, as a People Services Coordinator, she shares that passion with others.
For Mia, it all comes back to the people. "It really is a family that you're welcomed into from day one," she said. Now, she ensures every new associate feels that same warm welcome.
