Managing Director Dawn Southworth Brings Wealth of Hospitality Leadership, Willingness to Brave the Cold and Commitment to the Grand View Lodge Legacy

Nothing brings more joy and light to Dawn Southworth, Managing Director at Grand View Lodge, Spa & Golf Resort, than happy, content guests, service-oriented employees and a little, 5-pound maltese named Krew. As she looks across the resort, Dawn leads with a simple but powerful habit: walking the property with her "guest glasses." In these moments, she shifts her perspective to see the resort not just as an operator, but as a guest, employee and owner.

She observes the energy in each space and asks: Where are expectations being met or exceeded? Where can we improve? Dawn believes it's often the smallest details—a warm greeting, the atmosphere at breakfast, a family's arrival that leave the most lasting impressions.

This mindset shapes her leadership. By staying curious and focused on the guest experience, she fosters a culture where excellence is continuous. As she puts it, "Great hospitality begins with seeing the experience through someone else's eyes and caring enough to make it better."

Hospitality Leadership, Experience and Mentorship

Dawn's path into hospitality began unexpectedly. While studying to become a teacher, she worked at a college lodge where leaders encouraged her to pursue hospitality. That moment led her to Johnson & Wales University and ultimately to a career with brands like Marriott, Hilton, Ritz-Carlton and Omni. Who knew a young girl from Kentucky, spending time boating on Lake Cumberland with family and friends, would become a leader in the hospitality industry.

Her journey spans global experience in luxury operations, food and beverage and hotel openings. Along the way, she shaped her leadership style by learning from respected mentors and prioritizing meaningful relationships and growth.

Leading with Purpose

Though Minnesota wasn't initially on her radar nor was setting up residence in a cold and snowy climate, Dawn was drawn to Grand View Lodge's legacy. Today, she sees her role as stewarding a place where generations of families return to create lasting memories. Her team offered advice about staying warm during the cold winter months, and now she's a proud, cold-weather apparel aficionado!

Her leadership reflects courage, curiosity and purpose—showing how unexpected paths can lead to meaningful impact. "Leadership is not about the position you hold," she says, "but about the people you lift along the way."

During Women's History Month, Dawn's story reflects the power of courage, curiosity and purpose-driven leadership. Her journey, from an aspiring teacher to a hospitality leader, demonstrates how unexpected paths can lead to extraordinary impact.

Culture Comes First

For Dawn, culture is everything. She focuses on creating an environment where team members feel valued, supported and empowered. Through coaching and encouragement, she helps individuals build confidence and grow.

A direct communicator, she believes clarity builds trust. Her leadership is grounded in kindness, compassion and gratitude, recognizing that every team member brings unique strengths.

Creating Meaningful Moments

Some of Dawn's favorite moments are the simplest—like the lively energy of families enjoying breakfast together. These experiences reinforce her belief that hospitality is about creating memories that last for years. Her commitment to balance and wellbeing extends to her team, and even to Krew, who brings pure joy to guests.

Dawn's story is a reminder that leadership is defined by purpose. Through empathy and authenticity, she continues to shape a culture where both guests and employees are valued—and where meaningful experiences endure.
