Creating Memorable Golf Experiences for Guests at Grand View Lodge

If you have played at The Pines or The Preserve golf courses at Grand View Lodge, you may have met Greg Plumedahl. Greg greets golfers on the first tee, shares light-hearted jokes and makes everyone feel welcome. Now in his fifth season at Grand View Lodge, he works as a seasonal golf associate and a beloved figure by many. Greg may call himself "retired," but his work at The Pines and The Preserve golf courses keep him busy.

A Passion for Golf

Greg golfing

Golf is a significant part of Greg's life. He grew up in Plymouth, Minnesota, learning the game with his brother under their father's guidance. The family enjoyed golfing together every Father's Day, a tradition that expanded to include his sons as they grew older. "Three generations of guys played golf on Father's Day," he recalls fondly. Those shared moments are cherished memories for Greg.

His golf journey began as a teenager when he worked at Brookview Golf Course in Golden Valley. He later moved to Oak Ridge Country Club in Hopkins, gaining experience in outside services. There, he helped members with golf carts, bags and daily operations.

The move to Grand View Lodge was intentional. Greg and his wife dreamt of retiring in the Brainerd Lakes Area. They loved visiting the region over the years, and he always wanted a golf job after retirement.

A Day in the Life

Greg's days start early, often before sunrise. He begins his shift at 6 a.m., preparing the course before the first golfers arrive. His morning routine includes checking water stations, refilling sand and seed containers, ensuring cleanliness in bathrooms, and reviewing tee times. Everything must be ready for the guests.

Beyond the preparation, Greg finds joy in interacting with people. "The best part of the day is the interaction," he shares. Golfers and resort guests are usually in high spirits, enjoying their time on the course or vacation. His management background helps him connect with guests.

Years spent leading teams taught him the significance of personal interactions. "You learn to read the room," he explains. Some golfers want to chat, while others prefer to focus on their game. Greg strives to make every interaction personal, and this approach makes him memorable to many golfers.

Memorable Experiences

Family

Greg's personal touch is evident in the relationships he builds with repeat visitors. Golfers often return and reference past conversations. One memorable instance involved a corporate golf group connected to his daughter-in-law. After their visit, they spoke so much about Greg that she joked about being tired of hearing his name. "They remembered me as the starter," Greg laughs, surprised by the impact he has made.

Creating memorable experiences is at the heart of hospitality for Greg. He credits the leadership team at Grand View Lodge for fostering a culture where employees feel valued. "Management here is awesome," he says. "They genuinely thank people for what they do. It doesn't matter what your position is  they make you feel important."

The Specialness of Golf at Grand View Lodge

When asked about what makes golfing at Grand View Lodge special, Greg's enthusiasm shines. He discusses both courses with passion. At The Pines, he appreciates the variety of the 27-hole layout. "Each nine feels different," he explains. A long weekend can offer a completely unique experience each day.

Over the years, he has witnessed many improvements on the course. Notably, the upgraded white sand bunkers enhance both aesthetics and playability for golfers of all skill levels. "They look better, and they're friendlier to hit out of," he notes.

At The Preserve, the peaceful setting and dramatic elevation changes stand out to Greg. "There aren't homes surrounding the course, so it feels like you're really out in nature," he explains. Golfers may encounter deer or bald eagles, adding to the serene ambiance. The clubhouse deck, overlooking holes 1, 9, and 10, is a favorite among guests. "It's one of the best views in Minnesota," he adds proudly.

Beyond Golf

Outside of work, Greg enjoys quality time with his family. He and his wife, high school sweethearts approaching their 40th anniversary, have three children and seven grandchildren, with another on the way. Their lake home on Upper Hay Lake is often filled with family and pets, see Cooper above, all creating what Greg describes as "good chaos."

When he's not on the course, Greg enjoys books and shows with themes of resilience and strong storytelling. One of his favorite reads is Unbroken, the remarkable story of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic athlete and war survivor. "It really puts things in perspective," he reflects.

For television, Greg and his wife enjoy series like Yellowstone, 1923 and Shrinking. The mix of humor, drama and heart resonates with their outlook on life, blending enjoyment with meaningful storytelling.
