An Idea Born from Experience

When discussing cancer support, many think of hospitals and treatments. While these are vital, healing also requires rest and hope. This is where Thrive makes a significant impact.  Thrive is a partnership between the INDY Foundation and Grand View Lodge. It aims to serve Minnesota cancer warriors and their families. The program offers complimentary three-night stays at Grand View Lodge. This allows recipients to escape from appointments and stress to rest, relax and rejuvenate.

This program holds a special place in the hearts of many. It was born from lived experience. Cancer survivor Steph Kennelly (shown above) created this initiative after her own breast cancer journey. Diagnosed at age 37 in 2020, she faced many challenges during her treatment. The COVID-19 pandemic added to her isolation. However, during this difficult time, she found comfort in Nisswa's natural beauty. It inspired her to give others the same opportunity for healing and respite.

Hope and Healing

Since its inception in 2021, Thrive has welcomed over 80 recipients. Each participant experiences a much-needed respite through the program. One of those recipients, Jenna (shown above with family), is a Stage 4 breast cancer patient. Her words resonate with many who face similar challenges. She said that living with Stage IV cancer involves constant healthcare navigation. It can be easy to forget to slow down and cherish each moment. Her time away at Grand View Lodge allowed her to enjoy precious moments with friends and family. This experience reminds us that healing can take many forms. It can be a hospital breakthrough, or it can be a quiet morning by the lake, free from the weight of cancer.

Funding the Program

The success of Thrive relies on community support. The annual Drive for Thrive Golf Tournament at The Pine's Golf Course at Grand View Lodge, is the program's signature fundraiser. This event unites people for a day of generosity, fun and purpose. Last year, the tournament raised $12,000. This amount funded an entire cycle of Thrive stays for participating families.

Currently, the program accommodates 18 warriors per cycle. The funds raised also help provide gift cards to each applicant. This gesture shows them they matter, they are seen and they are not alone in their journey. The impact is profound. Every golfer, sponsor, donor and volunteer contributes to creating real moments of relief. These moments are vital for those facing one of life's toughest battles.
