The Top 7 Reasons Why You Must Join Us For the Distilled Weekend

Grand View Lodge invites you to our second annual Distilled: Craft Spirits and Artisan Meats Weekend April 7-9. Fifteen different spirits vendors from across the states (but mostly Minnesota) will join us for the event. The weekend kicks off Friday with a spirits dinner featuring a five course plated dinner. Saturday entails a day full of culinary classes and spirits seminars, tastings and, of course, sampling of a variety of spirits. Still not sure on the event, we have come up with seven reasons why you must join us!

1. The Friday spirits dinner is food and cocktail porn.

We use that term lightly, but it is crazy good. The weekend kicks off on Friday with a five-course plated Spirits Dinner in Grand View Lodge’s Heritage Room – guaranteed to satisfy any foodie. Try our Grilled Baby Bok Choy with red chili glazed pork belly, pickled vegetables, micro greens, and a yuzu vinaigrette or Shiso Leaf Wrapped Sea Bass with grilled mango fried rice, crispy taro root, and fermented black bean sauce. These fine dishes are expertly prepared by our Executive Chef Michael Manders and each paired with a cocktail by Tattersall Distilling, a destination micro-distillery and cocktail room from Northeast Minneapolis.  Check out the full menu here.

Not only will you enjoy the tastes of the evening but the entertainment as well. Our evening emcees are Jason DeRusha of WCCO’s ‘DeRusha Eats’ and Mike Augustyniak of WCCO’s ‘Mike’s Mix.’ This is an additional cost but well worth it. Be sure to reserve your seat today as space is limited.

2. The Emcees for the weekend are Jason DeRusha of WCCO’s DeRusha Eats and Mike Augustyniak of WCCO’s Mike’s Mix.

While our emcees aren’t major movie show stars they are still pretty well known in the state of Minnesota with their shows Mike’s Mix and DeRusha Eats. Haven’t heard of them? We are sure they won’t disappoint. They will add entertainment for the weekend, including personal insight from their shows, humor and interaction with the crowd.

Jason DeRusha hosts DeRusha Eats, a segment on WCCO where each week he features a local Minnesota restaurant. His food coverage was a finalist for Outstanding TV Segment in the prestigious national James Beard Awards. On WCCO’s Mike’s Mix, each week Mike finds a new cocktail from a local mixologist. You can learn bartending basics and different spirits to mix. He also has won a variety of Emmy Awards for broadcast.

3. The Culinary Classes/Spirits Seminars on Saturday are insightful and unique.

Saturday includes five hours of a variety of insightful culinary classes and spirits seminars put on by various distillery vendors from Minnesota. The “Barrel Aging” is the 4:30 PM seminar. A guest speaker from 45th Parallel will talk about their operation being a “full circle”. They buy grains from local growers and use them for production. Once they are finished with them, it heads back to the farm for feed which allows for no waste and a highly sustainable local circle. Other vendors will present on drink modifiers, understanding the nuances of the spirits, MN whiskeys and bourbons and more!

4. Saturday evening is the Grand Tasting. What is better than culinary craft meats, distilled spirits and a good time?

The Grand Tasting is the highlight of the weekend. The Gull Lake Center is filled with 15 spirits vendors, four stations of food, plus appetizers and desserts in the center of the room. When you arrive the grand tasting you will receive a booklet to take notes in on the spirits you taste and a free cocktail glass.

The four food stations feature veggie, appetizer, turf, surf and dessert. You’ll be able to enjoy tastes of Israeli couscous salad, cherry wood smoked brisket, paella seafood poach, snow crab claw fondue, and more. Whether you prefer bourbon, brandy, gin or vodka; the vendors will offer a small sample of your preference and also have a signature drink to try. It’s a great way to taste a variety of potables in one place and decide your favorite. Plus each signature drink our vendors produce are ‘crazy good!’

5. The vendors are unique.

Like we said before, we have invited 15 vendors to our event. Each vendor is unique in their own way. For example, Copper & Kings American Craft Brandy of Louisville, Kentucky, uses traditional copper pot-distillation to forge their brandy. Du Nord Craft Spirits of Minneapolis is a small batch distillery producing artisan gin, vodka, liqueurs and whiskeys. They are “grain to glass” craft distillery, meaning they mill, mash, and distill their own entire product with ingredients sourced as locally as possible.

6. Sunday’s Bloody Mary Bar is the perfect way to end the weekend.

You can’t go wrong when it comes to creating your own Bloody Mary. The bar will be stocked with a variety of finger toppings like bacon strips, olives, cheese, celery and more. They say the cure to a hangover is a perfect Bloody Mary, so aside from the obvious excuse to get a drink at 8 a.m., the Bloody Mary Bar looks perfect in your itinerary.

7.  Staying at the most awarded resort in the state.
